Research Submarine Cutaway

All > "Art" > Drawings > Research Submarine Cutaway by frohickey
This is my first attampt at a technical cutaway drawing. I've always been fascinated and impressed with this kind of illustration because it really gives you a understandable look at the interiors of things and how they work as opposed to overly complex diagrams and plans. I figured I'd start with something relatively easy, as submarines are basically tubes with stuff in them; no really difficult architecture and straightforward arrangement of things. Of course, I forgot some details like ballast tanks and such but it at least looks convincing.

Here are a few detail pix to get an idea of how it all came together. The original sketch of the sub was done on a restaurant paper placemat.
The conning tower. You can see the periscope extends through the body of the sub so it can be used from each deck.
Another error on my part was the orientation of the deck hatch. It should be facing the conning tower instead. How do the crew get inside?
I should have made more crew quarters visible.

are those missles under the nose? Odd for a research sub, unless they are actually sensor probes.

Sure those are missiles. Every good research sub has missiles. Didn't you ever see "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" or "Seaquest?" :)

I like your cutaways, Frohicky. Having grown up with two books of Steven Biesty's Incredible Cross-Sections I'm quite a fan of this style of ilustration, like you. Yours are all missing something, though. Every single one of Steven Biesty's Incredible Cross-Sections have at least one person sitting on a dunny. I see no dunny!

Umm.... I'm not sure what a Dunny is. What is it?

I think it's a toilet. Or in nautical terminology, a poop-hatch.
